With my interest in both Inquiry learning and the 8 ways model, I seek to use a variety of teaching strategies in my classroom. I have:
-
used M & Ms to teach about sampling in VCE Psychology,
-
had my year 9 maths students acting as data points on a cartesian plane (aka the basketball court) (adapting a Maths300 lesson)
-
used 'flipped classroom' strategies to ensure students are prepared for the content of our next lesson
-
turned year 9 number skills revision into a 'trivia night' games
-
used student logbooks to scaffold learners as they tackle their student-led, independent research investigations
-
had students analyse data from real life scenarios & websites to learn about bivariate data
While these are all good strategies, they are only good if they actually work with my learners. There is also a time & place for traditional note taking, test sitting and discussion in the classroom. The challenge is to get the balance right for the particular mix of learners I have in front of me.
